The firmware update made booting from an iso usb stick finally work, with these additions to the grub entry :īefore installation, I had given my ssd a tiny first partition containing /efi/boot/bootia32.efi, so the Mac would boot. OSX formerly said I had 1,1 and now I have 2,1. This implies to me that I was making mistakes, but I don't know where. It took multiple attempts-not sure how many. Much thanks to absque fenestris for suggesting the firmware update.

I can see the USB drive (which has about 50G free) and the ssd, but apparently the install script can't. When I try to install, I answer language and keyboard, then the install script announces that I need 12.8GB to install, and only have 0B. I found a way to boot from a USB drive/ISO, editing the grub entry and adding nomodeset noefi. Hope it helps ! (I found myself trying during days, hopefully had some time during lockdown.) It is momently running headless, and I access it with SSH or VNC Bingo ! Install as you would normally do PlopKexec detects bootable partitions, including USB Boot using PlopKexec (32 bits) from a CD-ROM: write the ISO on a flash drive (using Balena Etcher) Sadly, the DVD would not boot, even with another drive (booting from this old EFI something else than MacOS seems to be tricky), so I found a work-around:

I've used the script of Matt Gadient to patch my Ulyana 64 bits ISO (Cinnamon). I have installed Mint on my Mac Pro 2006.Īs it has a 32 bits EFI, you have to boot first in Bios mode.
Otherwise, this neither will help nor is needed for Linux. The only EFI upgrade I did was to support the x5355 octo-core CPU iea of the stock quad-core (double dual-core actually). The Mac Pro 2006-2008 is really a breed apart due to its 32bits EFI. On a MacBook, I managed to bypass all the UEFI stuff that way. Start the inserted Mint ISO DVD while holding down the C key until the Mint selection window appears. Install a GPT partitioned SSD (the file system does not matter - it will be overwritten during the installation anyway). A more up-to-date graphics card, a USB 3 expansion and an SSD should help an expandable device from 2006 to a little more speed. Otherwise, this website is always the best place to go for a precise determination of a Mac:Īs soon as the Mac is not running under OSX / macOS, you are no longer dependent on Apple for expansion cards. There is apparently a firmware upgrade with which you can bring the Mac Pro (mid 2006) to a slightly newer state.
